Haunted Japan: Himeji Castle, Taira no Masakado and Tsunami Spirits

The route includes the unfinished Nakagusuku Hotel in Okinawa and Fukuoka’s Old Chusetsu, also known in English-language accounts as the Inukane Pass Tunnel. It continues to Oiran Buchi in Yamanashi, the Shimonoseki Strait story of Taira no Tomomori, the vengeful spirit of Taira no Masakado, the round schoolhouse near Bibai, Sunshine 60 in Tokyo and Okiku’s Well at Himeji Castle.

The final segment considers accounts of spirits associated with communities struck by tsunami. Throughout the episode, historical people and places remain distinct from later legend, urban folklore and reported encounters, allowing the stories to be presented with both atmosphere and context.
