| Governors’ residences combine public symbolism with the intimate history of the families and staff who lived inside them. Volume 1 brings together six sites from different periods of American history, including purpose-built executive homes, preserved landmarks and a colonial residence.
The episode visits the Former Governors’ Mansion in Bismarck, North Dakota, and the North Carolina Executive Mansion in Raleigh. It then turns to the Texas Governor’s Mansion in Austin, the Spanish Governor’s Palace in San Antonio and Georgia’s Old Governor’s Mansion in Milledgeville. The final segment reaches colonial New Netherland and the Dutch governor’s residence in New Amsterdam. The histories of these buildings can be documented, while the ghost stories associated with them belong to reports and tradition. Keeping those categories separate allows the episode to preserve the atmosphere of the tales while providing a useful introduction to the political and architectural settings behind them. |
