| A theatre is built to hold voices, movement and memory, even after the curtain falls. This episode explores the ghost stories associated with historic Broadway venues and the performers, owners and employees whose names remain connected to them.
The tour visits the New Amsterdam, Belasco, Richard Rodgers, Eugene O’Neill, Stephen Sondheim, Gershwin and Imperial theatres. It then continues to the Lyceum, Palace and Lyric theatres, each with a different architectural and theatrical history. The final stop is the venue once known as the Martin Beck Theatre, renamed the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in 2003. The episode separates documented theatre history from backstage tradition and reported encounters while considering why spaces devoted to performance are especially rich settings for supernatural lore. |
