| Charleston’s supernatural reputation is inseparable from its long and often painful history. Established in 1670 and shaped by its harbor, the South Carolina city became a major colonial port whose wealth depended heavily on the labor and sale of enslaved people.
The city witnessed revolution, secession and the opening battle of the Civil War at Fort Sumter. Fires, hurricanes, epidemics and the destructive earthquake of 1886 added further layers of loss and rebuilding to streets already dense with family, religious, commercial and military history. This episode explores the ghost stories that have grown from that past without presenting legend as a substitute for history. |
