This episode returns to that tradition with abridged readings of two tales in which ordinary duties and familiar objects become sources of mounting dread.Charles Dickens’ The Signal-Man, first published in 1866, follows a railway worker troubled by an apparition and warnings he cannot fully interpret. Its setting joins Victorian fascination with new technology to older ideas about prophecy, guilt and supernatural intervention.
Algernon Blackwood’s The Kit-Bag, published in 1908, centers on a borrowed piece of luggage and the unease surrounding a recent murder trial. |
