| Hospitals and sanatoriums carry histories of care, illness, isolation and institutional change. This episode visits eight American sites where those histories have become intertwined with reports of apparitions, voices and unexplained activity.
The route begins at the former Traverse City State Hospital in Michigan, now part of the Grand Traverse Commons, and continues to Topeka State Hospital in Kansas, Danvers State Hospital in Massachusetts and Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Kentucky. Each institution served a different population and changed substantially over time. The remaining stories come from the former tuberculosis hospital in Greenville, South Carolina, remembered as Devil’s Castle; Broughton Hospital in North Carolina; St. Albans Sanatorium in Virginia; and the former Petersburg General Hospital. The episode keeps patient history and changing standards of care separate from supernatural claims, which it presents as reports and local lore. |
