Haunted Southampton Pubs: The Red Lion and Duke of Wellington

| This Short visits two historic pubs in Southampton’s Old Town: the Red Lion on High Street and the Duke of Wellington on Bugle Street. The Red Lion contains a medieval cellar and a timbered room known as Henry V’s Court Room. Pub tradition connects that room to the 1415 trial of the Southampton Plot conspirators, although historians have questioned whether the surviving building fits that version of events. The Duke of Wellington has foundations and cellars dating to a house built around 1220 for Benedict Ace, one of Southampton’s earliest known mayors. The property was damaged during the French raid of 1338, incorporated into the later Bere House and renamed after the Battle of Waterloo. The episode brings the two pubs’ deep history together with the ghost stories that have gathered around them. |
