| Memphis’s Orpheum Theatre stands near Main and Beale at the heart of the city’s entertainment district. The site began as the Grand Opera House in 1890 and joined the Orpheum vaudeville circuit in 1907. After the earlier theatre was destroyed by fire in 1923, the present $1.6 million venue opened in 1928 with live acts, silent films and its Mighty Wurlitzer organ.
The Orpheum Theatre Group also acknowledges the property’s supernatural reputation, describing seven reported spirits. The best known is Mary, a playful and mischievous twelve-year-old associated with the auditorium. This Short makes the landmark the focus of a Memphis paranormal road trip, placing its ghost stories alongside the theatre’s documented history without adding an unsupported explanation for who Mary was or how she died. |
