Currituck Beach Lighthouse: Sadie Johnson and the North Room

The story begins with Sadie Johnson, a child said to have lived with her aunt and uncle at the lighthouse after her parents died. According to the legend, Sadie drowned after going to the beach alone. A later keeper’s wife, suffering from tuberculosis, was also isolated in the North Room, deepening its reputation as a place of sadness.

Later accounts describe children hearing a voice invite them into the sealed house and restoration workers finding the North Room unusually cold and uncomfortable. Some modern visitors also report hearing a child say, “Come play with me.” The episode presents these details as lighthouse folklore rather than verified evidence.
