About this episode
| The Ellen Glasgow House at Main and Foushee streets preserves the Richmond home of one of Virginia’s most important novelists. Built in 1841, the house became Glasgow’s home when her family moved there in 1887, and she remained there for the rest of her life. Glasgow began publishing novels in the 1890s and received the 1942 Pulitzer Prize for In This Our Life.
Local ghost stories describe Glasgow’s apparition and the sound of a typewriter in the room where she worked. Other reports involve a former maid near the front door and a butler seen around the kitchen and sleeping porch. This short video presents these accounts as traditions connected to the people who once lived and worked in the house.
