| Trails can make familiar landscapes feel isolated, especially when night, weather and local memory alter the experience of a walk. This episode visits eight American hiking areas associated with ghost stories, abandoned places and reported encounters.
The western route includes Griffith Park in Los Angeles, the Cobb Estate in Altadena and Frenchwoman’s Road in what is now Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest in Montana. It then travels to Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky and Ghost House Trail at Big Ridge State Park in Tennessee. The final hikes are Letchworth Village Cemetery at Cheesecote Mountain Town Park in New York, Noland Creek Trail in Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Appalachian Trail through Virginia’s George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. |
