| Ireland’s ruins preserve layers of religious, military and social history, along with supernatural traditions that have outlived the people who first told them. The fifth Haunted Ireland episode crosses islands, rectories, friaries, hospitals and castles in search of the stories attached to abandoned and historic places.
The journey includes Scattery Island, Carlingford Rectory and Bonamargy Friary, whose folklore includes the mysterious Black Nun. It continues to the former Roe Valley Hospital, Castlelyons Castle ruins and Charleville Forest Castle before reaching the Barracks in Ballyshannon and the unsettling legend of the Goblin Child. Some accounts are rooted in identifiable people and institutions; others survive primarily as folklore. By presenting both with appropriate caution, the episode explores how religious life, institutional memory, ruined architecture and local storytelling have combined to shape Ireland’s enduring haunted landscape. |
