| Virginia ghost stories grew from centuries of settlement, conflict, family memory and changing attitudes toward the supernatural. This statewide episode moves beyond Richmond to historic homes, coastal legends, mountain estates and communities whose stories have circulated since the nineteenth century or earlier.
Northern and central Virginia provide Ben Lomond Historic Site in Manassas, the Pink Dogwood in The Plains and Swannanoa near Afton. Old House Woods in Mathews County and the tales of Tangier Island bring the Chesapeake into the journey. The Martha Washington Inn in Abingdon, Bacon’s Castle in Surry County and Lynchburg’s Rocking Cradle House complete the route. The program treats documented people and places as the foundation, then identifies apparitions, curses and other supernatural elements as witness accounts and folklore. |
