| Winter darkness and holiday gatherings helped make ghost stories part of the Victorian Christmas tradition. Volume 4 continues that custom with two nineteenth-century works in which frozen landscapes, isolation and supernatural danger turn the season toward suspense. The first reading is The Frozen Husband by Frank Ibberson Jervis, published in 1869. The second is The Werewolves by Henry Beaugrand, published in 1898. Together they show how period writers could move from domestic unease to the older fears associated with wilderness and transformation. The episode presents both stories as seasonal readings while retaining their original historical context. |
