| The Victorian Christmas season was not limited to cheerful celebrations. Long nights and fireside gatherings also created an ideal setting for supernatural stories. Volume 2 revives that tradition with two readings first published more than fifty years apart.
The Green Huntsman by Joseph Holt Ingraham dates to 1841 and brings an early nineteenth-century voice to the program. Warned by the Wire by Louis Glass, published in 1895, reflects a later world in which modern communication could become part of a ghostly warning. Their different settings and eras show the range of material that appeared under the broad heading of a Christmas ghost story. The episode supplies author and publication context for both selections, then lets the stories carry the evening. Listeners can enjoy the readings on their own or follow the larger series to see how supernatural holiday literature changed across the Victorian period. |
